Qatar Fertiliser Company (Qafco) is set to achieve an annual production capacity of 3.6mn tonnes of ammonia and 4.2mn tonnes of urea with the completion of Qafco 5 in 2011, managing director Khalifa Abdulla al-Sowaidi (pictured) has said.
“At this level, Qafco will become the world’s largest single site producer of ammonia and urea after it occupied the position of biggest producer of urea with the completion of Qafco 4 in 2004.
“The completion of Qafco 6 in 2012 will mark an unprecedented event with regard to the company’s production capacity of urea, which will reach 5.5mn tonnes annually. This will strengthen the company’s position in the international fertilisers market,” al-Sowaidi said in a statement.
He said Qafco exports ammonia and urea to more than 35 countries. Ammonia is exported to markets such as India, Jordan, South Africa, North Korea and the US.
Urea is exported to markets in Africa, Australia and North and South America. Qafco’s products – both ammonia and urea - have a special importance in these markets because of their ‘purity and high quality’.
“After becoming the world’s largest single site producer and exporter of urea with a wide distribution network, Qafco is preparing to become the world’s largest single producer and exporter of ammonia and urea within the next few years. This will be achieved after the completion of the two expansion projects Qafco 5 and Qafco 6. At this level, Qafco’s international marketing exposure will become wider,” he said.
Qapco plans to raise production to 30mn tonnes per year by 2014 from a current 18mn tonnes, a company executive said in March. Investment in Qapco is expected to jump to $12bn by 2012 from a current $1.7bn as Qatar becomes an important regional centre for petrochemical production, he had said. Considering the booming industry, Qatar is set to become an important regional hub, he said.
