Rubber production near two-decade lows in India
India's 2015-16 rubber output has declined to 56,3000 tonnes which is the lowest in nearly two decades. The fall in output is prompted by the two years of price slump making the production drop 13 per cent from last year's 64,500 tonnes, as per the data from Rubber Board.
Consumption of rubber declined after a long time. Rubber consumption declined 3 per cent to to 987,540 tonnes from 1020910 tonnes a year ago which was the peak level. Despite a slump in output, consumption had grown in 2014-15 period.
In fiscal 2016 rubber prices fell nearly 27 per cent before making the recovery. In February prices fell to Rs 91 per kg but surged to Rs 115 per kg by the end of March.
