Tire Technology Highlights: From Specialized Agricultural UTV Tires to Recycled Tires for a Circular Economy Model

Titan launches specialized UTV tires for agriculture
Tire manufacturer Titan recently introduced the ITP CrossTrax tire line for utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), developed based on direct feedback from dealers and farmers. At an event in early 2025, Titan dealers repeatedly raised concerns about durability and vehicle downtime caused by tire-related issues. Farmers later confirmed these challenges, emphasizing the need for a UTV tire specifically designed for agricultural operations rather than products primarily developed for recreational use.
According to Titan, modern UTVs have become essential tools on farms, frequently used to transport animal feed, fencing materials, spraying equipment, and agricultural supplies across various terrains, including fields, gravel roads, and compacted dirt tracks. Tire punctures caused by crop residue and field debris, as well as rapid wear from continuous operation on mixed terrain, are among the most common issues reported by users.
The CrossTrax tire was designed to directly address these challenges with three major improvements: an aramid fiber-reinforced construction layer to enhance resistance against punctures and cuts caused by branches, rocks, and agricultural debris; a lower void-to-lug ratio to increase road contact area and improve stability across different surfaces; and larger tread blocks to promote more even wear, smoother operation, and longer service life. According to Titan representatives, initial evaluations indicate that the tire delivers improved durability and stability under real farm operating conditions.
The ITP CrossTrax line is currently available in nine sizes, ranging from 25x8R-12 to 30x10R-14, with three additional sizes expected to be introduced soon. The product is compatible with popular agricultural UTV models such as Polaris Ranger, Kawasaki Mule, and John Deere Gator.
Continental develops Renault-specific tire with up to 35% lower rolling resistance
As part of its strategic cooperation with Renault Group, German tire manufacturer Continental has developed a tire model with rolling resistance up to 35% lower than the level required to achieve the EU’s highest tire energy efficiency rating — Grade A. For an electric vehicle with a 500 km driving range, this improvement could translate into approximately 30 km of additional driving distance per charge.
The tire was developed based on Continental’s EcoContact 7 platform and further customized according to Renault Group’s requirements, combining a specially modified tread rubber compound, customized sidewall design, and optimized tire construction.
Rolling resistance accounts for approximately 20–30% of a vehicle’s energy consumption, regardless of the type of powertrain. The lower the rolling resistance, the less energy is lost through tire deformation and friction during road contact. This factor is particularly important for electric vehicles, as reducing rolling resistance helps lower energy consumption and extend driving range. At the same time, tires must continue to ensure their essential safety function, as they are the only contact point between the vehicle and the road surface, determining the grip required for braking performance and stable handling.
To develop this tire, the two companies applied advanced virtual development and testing methods, including Continental’s driver-in-the-loop simulation system, which allows tire characteristics to be evaluated and optimized under realistic driving conditions at an early development stage. This was combined with Renault Group’s Roads driving simulation system, which digitally recreates real-world road conditions and enables repeatable testing. The combination of both systems helps accelerate development while reducing the need for physical prototype tires.
Michelin expands X Line Grip D truck tire range with retread version and new sizes
Launched in 2025, Michelin’s X Line Grip D drive tire range for commercial trucks is recognized for strong traction, long service life, and improved operational performance. In response to market demand, Michelin has expanded the product line with a pre-mold retread version and additional sizes, serving long-haul and regional transportation operations in North America.
Michelin’s Duracore casing is designed to maximize durability and retreadability, allowing tires to achieve up to 1 million miles of service through four retread cycles. This helps fleets extend tire lifespan and reduce total ownership costs. The new retread version uses the same tread design and rubber compound technology as the original tire, maintaining traction, wear performance, and operating efficiency throughout the casing lifecycle.
The X Line Grip D features a directional chevron tread pattern and an improved rubber compound. According to Michelin, the tire provides 20% more mileage compared with the previous XDN2 model, offers lower rolling resistance than leading competitors, and delivers better wet-surface starting traction than competing models, whether new or retreaded.
Korean industry–research consortium launches sustainable tire project based on circular economy principles
In South Korea, Hankook Tire has launched the project “Development of Sustainable Material Tire Manufacturing Technology” under the 2026 Environmental Technology Development Programme of South Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment.
The project aims to promote South Korea’s circular economy model by recovering high-quality recycled materials from end-of-life tires and incorporating them into the commercial production of new tires. The project focuses on two main areas: developing advanced recycling technologies for waste tires and establishing manufacturing technologies for tires using sustainable materials.
This national-level project expands existing private-sector research initiatives into a broader cooperation ecosystem involving businesses, academia, and research institutions. The goal is to improve adaptability to changing environmental regulations while strengthening raw material supply chain resilience.
The project involves 11 participating organizations, led by M&B Green US, together with Kumho Petrochemical, HS Hyosung, HS Hyosung Advanced Materials, Solvay, Endirection, the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Pusan National University, Kwangwoon University, and Soongsil University.
Through the project, Hankook Tire aims to commercialize next-generation tires containing more than 85% sustainable materials while reducing more than 50% of carbon emissions during production. The initiative is also expected to provide large-scale validation for South Korea’s “Tire-to-Tire” circular economy model by demonstrating products and evaluating overall performance.
