Ninh Binh Nitrogenous Fertilizer: Utilising Surplus CO2, Generating over VND 23 Billion in Benefits
By securing a supply of liquid NH3 to make use of surplus CO2, Ninh Binh Nitrogenous Fertilizer and Chemical Limited Company (Ninh Binh Nitrogenous Fertilizer) has successfully implemented the initiative “Importing Liquid NH3 to Increase Urea Output and Reduce CO2 Emissions”. This solution has both improved production efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions, delivering benefits valued at over VND 23.4 billion.

Harnessing Surplus CO2
During operations, the Urea plant’s output is entirely dependent on the load of the NH3 synthesis plant. When the CO2 produced exceeds immediate requirements, the surplus is vented to the atmosphere via valve 12PV031B, which typically remains 5–7% open.
Additionally, after each operation cycle, the Urea plant must wait about 16 hours from the start-up of the Gasification Furnace before operations can resume, as it must await a supply of NH3. This extended start-up period affects production continuity and delays product delivery to the market.
To address this, Ninh Binh Nitrogenous Fertilizer investigated the option of importing additional liquid NH3, thereby supplementing raw materials for Urea production and making better use of available CO2 during operations.
Increasing Urea Output and Securing Supply
Introducing imported liquid NH3 into the process enables the Urea plant to use surplus CO2 for production, allowing the Urea plant to operate at a higher capacity than the NH3 plant. This also empowers the company to be more proactive in organising production and achieving business targets.
In particular, with an additional supply of liquid NH3, the Urea plant can start up immediately once suitable CO2 is available, reducing the time to bring Urea to market by about eight hours compared to before. This quicker start-up helps the company secure supply, especially during periods of high market demand.
Furthermore, the company can flexibly import liquid NH3 when raw material prices are lower than the cost of self-production. This is one factor helping to cut costs, reduce product prices, and enhance business performance.
Economic Efficiency Linked with Emissions Reduction
Beyond economic gains, the solution also reduces the amount of surplus CO2 emitted into the environment, saves raw materials, and increases the efficient use of production inputs.
From June to the end of 2025, the adoption of this solution has yielded benefits of over VND 23.4 billion.
These results demonstrate the practical effectiveness of process improvement, proactive raw material management, and optimised utilisation of material flows. This initiative also contributes to the goal of raising production efficiency, reducing emissions, and advancing sustainable development at Ninh Binh Nitrogenous Fertilizer.
