Viet Tri Chemicals Applies IIoT for Online Transformer Monitoring
Moving from primarily periodic on-site inspections, Viet Tri Chemicals Joint Stock Company has applied IIoT technology to collect data, enable centralised monitoring, and provide automated alerts. The initiative, “Online Monitoring of Transformer Parameters” by Đào Hoài Thanh and Nguyễn Ngọc Hoàn, enables the technical team to be more proactive in monitoring equipment status and addressing any signs of abnormality.
From periodic inspections to continuous monitoring
Transformers play a crucial role in the power supply and distribution system for production at Viet Tri Chemicals. Ensuring stable operation of these devices is directly linked to the safety of the electrical system and the uninterrupted running of production lines.
Previously, key operating parameters—such as oil temperature, voltage, current, and load—were mainly monitored through scheduled on-site checks. This approach required technical staff to be physically present at the equipment to inspect, record, and compile data.
However, the condition of equipment can vary over time and certain abnormalities may arise between checks. The challenge, therefore, is to enable more frequent monitoring, detect abnormal changes early, and provide timely information to those responsible.

In response, the authors Đào Hoài Thanh and Nguyễn Ngọc Hoàn have researched and rolled out the application of IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) technology for the online monitoring of transformer parameters.
Transferring equipment data to the digital environment
The core of the solution is connecting the collection of transformer parameters to a monitoring system, transforming the process from manual inspections to automated data collection and updates.
Operating data are gathered via measurement devices and transmitted to the system for centralised monitoring. Instead of frequent physical presence at the transformer area, technical staff can now access operational information directly from the system.
A significant feature of this solution is automatic alerts. When monitored parameters exceed set thresholds or show unusual signs, the system sends warnings by email to the technical team and relevant managers. This ensures rapid notification, enabling timely investigation and appropriate action.
Operational status data are stored, monitored, and serve as a foundation for analysis, inspections, and maintenance.
Rather than only having a snapshot of equipment condition at the time of inspection, the technical team now has access to trends in parameters over time. This represents a shift in management methods, especially for electrical equipment vital to the power supply for production.
A more proactive approach to equipment management and maintenance
The adoption of IIoT reduces reliance on manual inspection methods while increasing the capacity for remote monitoring. When the system detects abnormal parameters and issues an alert, technical staff can quickly receive information, inspect equipment, and determine the appropriate response.
The solution facilitates a more proactive approach to equipment management—moving from waiting for scheduled inspections or reacting to incidents, to continuous monitoring and early detection of matters requiring attention.
Another value of the initiative is its scalability. Starting with transformers, the methods of data collection, transmission, and monitoring can be further developed for other electrical equipment, tailored to the management needs and actual conditions of the business.
The “Online Monitoring of Transformer Parameters” initiative demonstrates that digital transformation at Viet Tri Chemicals is being implemented from specific operational requirements. As equipment data are collected and integrated into a centralised monitoring system, operational management becomes more proactive in detecting, checking, and addressing anomalies, thereby improving equipment management and supporting the digitalisation of production.
